Easter Sunday is widely celebrated by Christians as the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead. But was the resurrection historically and biblically said to happen on that specific day?
According to the New Testament, particularly in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, Jesus was crucified on a Friday-now observed as Good Friday-and was buried before sunset. The Gospels then state that on the “third day,” early Sunday morning, women followers of Jesus went to the tomb and found it empty. Angels told them He had risen. This sequence is the foundation for Easter Sunday being recognized as the day of resurrection.
Historically, the exact date of Jesus’ resurrection isn’t known. The modern celebration of Easter changes every year because it’s based on the lunar calendar, not a fixed date. However, the symbolic meaning remains strong: Easter Sunday commemorates the resurrection, regardless of the exact historical date.
So while we may not know the exact date of the resurrection, Christian tradition firmly holds that it happened on a Sunday-celebrated today as Easter.
